Copyright
Copyright protects original creative works — books, music, films, software, paintings, and more. In India, copyright is automatic from the moment of creation — you do not need to register it. However, registration provides stronger legal protection and is useful in disputes.
Duration: Lifetime of the author + 60 years.
Trademark
A trademark protects your brand identity — name, logo, tagline, or any distinctive mark. Once registered with the Trade Marks Registry, you have the exclusive right to use it in your category of goods or services.
Duration: 10 years, renewable indefinitely.

Patent
A patent protects new inventions — products or processes that are novel, non-obvious, and industrially applicable. In India, patents are granted by the Patent Office for a period of 20 years.
Software as such, mathematical methods, and business methods are not patentable in India. However, technical inventions involving software may qualify.
Design Registration
The unique visual appearance of a product — its shape, pattern, colour, or configuration — can be registered under the Designs Act. This protects how a product looks, not how it works.
